Everything You Need to Know About Starting a Skin-Care Routine

Confused about your skincare routine and the order of your products?
Looking for advice on what product to use and when? Check out our guide below for how to use products together to create your own, customised skincare regime.

1. Cleanser

Start with the Pure Fiji Coconut Cleansing Balm to remove makeup and impurities. Follow up the cleansing balm with a foaming/gel/milk/cream/oil cleanser (depending on your skin type) to double cleanse your skin. The second cleanser should address your particular skin type or concern and should have ingredients to hydrate, smooth, exfoliate or treat specific skin concerns.

2. Toner

Toner removes any last traces of dirt, grime and impurities stuck in your pores after you wash your face. When added to your daily skincare routine and used regularly, it can have a major positive impact on the appearance and tightness of your pores (goodbye aging skin). We have a range of fantastic toners; if you have acne-prone skin try the Environ Focus Care Clarity+ Botanical Infused Sebu-Tone Clarifier which helps to remove the build-up of dead skin cells and assists in minimising the appearance of an oily shine.

3. Hydrating Serum

When it comes to moisturising, everyone's skin has different needs. But there's one product that we ALL can benefit from using: a hydrating serum. That's because it's packed with a high concentration of humectants, which are ingredients that attract water to plump and moisturize your skin. The Ultraceuticals B2 Hydrating serum is a great oil free serum to help dramatically increase the hydration levels in your skin. Another option could be the Environ Focus Care Moisture+ HA Intensive Hydrating Serum; the Hyaluronic Acid in this serum helps skin appear hydrated plump and healthy. Both can be used as your first serum AM and PM.

4. Exfoliating serums

Exfoliating serums have blends of acids that work together to remove dead skin cells, they work best on skin that is dry or suffers from hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles as the acids help slough off dead skin and tackle discoloration concerns - goodbye sunspots! You could try the Ultraceuticals Even Skintone Serum with AHA's, BHA's and Niacinamide, powerful exfoliators working to brighten and even skin-tone. We only suggest using one exfoliating acid at a time once a day. Pop into our clinics to find out the right acid for you and when you should use it.

5. Treatment Product

Target specific skin concerns with powerful, active ingredients. It’s best to use Vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. We're loving the Pure Fiji Vitamin C Brightening Serum! Supercharged with Kakadu plum, Bakuchiol and Hyaluronate, it'll improve the luminosity and radiance of your skin. For Retinol in the evening, try the Ultraceuticals Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum Mild, this mild formulation allows first time users of Retinol (Vitamin A) to experience optimal benefits.

6. Eye Cream/Gel

The main goal of an eye cream, aside from brightening the eye area and reducing the look of fine lines is to deliver the same ingredients you would use on the other parts of the face but at doses that are gentle enough to not trigger irritation in the delicate area of our eyes. Our best-selling and most popular product, the Youth EssentiA Vita Peptide Eye Gel by Environ is a quick-absorbing eye gel containing essential vitamins, antioxidants and peptides to assist in hydrating your skin, improving tone and elasticity, perfect for the delicate area around your eyes. This gel has Hyaluronic Acid which is synthesised and renewed naturally to keep your skin looking youthful and structurally resilient - we lose up to 50% of that daily, resulting in laxity and deepening wrinkles which is most visible around the eye area, so its really really important to replace that.

7. Moisturisers

On top of everything else you need to do in the morning, moisturising your skin can feel like another chore - so why do it? Well, moisturising doesn’t just feel great, it can help keep your skin clear, smooth, and wrinkle-free in the future. We ALL want that! At About Face, we have a range of options depending on your skin concerns. In the morning for dry skin, the Ultraceuticals Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 30 - Hydrating will protect your skin with broad spectrum sun protection combined with a boost of moisture. For oily skin, try the Ultra Hydrating Lotion, its lightweight, fast absorbing and hydrating. Layer your Retinol in the evenings with the Ultra Moisturiser Cream with antioxidant Vitamin E, Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramide 3, suitable for normal to dry skin types.

8. Face oil

Face oils are designed to provide skin with moisture and lock in hydration. Typically formulated with a mixture of plant oils, this essential comes in handy to soften, nourish, and balance skin for a healthy-looking glow. We absolutely LOVE the Pure Fiji Hydrate & Nourish Luxury Face Oil with the Power of 5 (unique botanical blend) organic cold-pressed oils, Coconut, Macadamia, Sikeci, Dilo and Moringa oil. This supercharged anti-aging blend of oils is full of antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamins to hydrate, nourish and smooth skin while restoring radiance and leaving your skin with a youthful glow.

9. Sunscreen

Yes, even in the colder months! In addition to slowing ageing of the skin, sunscreen prevents facial brown spots and skin discolorations. For those who want chemical-free active ingredients, Elta MD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47 is the ideal daily sunscreen. Great for your kids too! This gentle formula glides on wet or dry skin and rubs in quickly. It covers both UVA/UVB sun protection, its fragrance-free, oil-free, paraben-free, sensitivity-free, and dye-free.
