What is Fraxel?
Fraxel re:fine is the worldwide gold standard in anti-ageing lasers, resulting in smoother, younger-looking skin. Fraxel re:fine rejuvenates your skin safely, effectively and quickly. By stimulating the growth of new collagen from the inside out, Fraxel re:fine can eliminate dark spots and actually prevent fine lines from appearing! This enables you to keep that youthful radiant, healthy glow and put your best face forward at any age. It’s suitable for all skin types including Asian and dark skin colours. About Face are the only practitioners in New Zealand with Fraxel re:fine laser.
How will it improve my skin?
It is designed to give you smoother, younger, fresher looking skin with improved tone and texture. It is fantastic for reducing fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and reducing the appearance of unwanted brown spots. Mild acne scarring can also be treated.
Results can be visible within a week of treatment. Your skin will progressively improve over the next few months as the healing process that rebuilds your own natural collagen and elastin continues and replaces your damaged tissue. Optimal improvement is seen in two to three months after your treatment course has finished.
Who does it suit?
Perfect for those aged over 40 who are concerned about wrinkles and fine lines, lack of firmness, discolouration and lacklustre skin. Fraxel re-establishes the contours of the face, reduces wrinkles all over the face, improves skin firmness, refines texture, delivers visible results to delay ageing around the eyes, reduces acne scarring (in all ages) and evens out skin colour, treating sun damage and stubborn pigmentation. Fraxel re:fine can be used on all skin colours, from very fair to very dark.
What happens during treatment?
A typical Fraxel treatment is completed in about 30 to 45 minutes, but we allow an appointment time of two hours for pre and post care. Most of our clients describe a ‘prickling’ sensation during the treatment. A topical anaesthetic is applied before the procedure to minimise discomfort and cold air is applied throughout the treatment, which helps combat the heat your skin generates.
How many treatments do I need and how often?
An effective treatment plan usually includes three Fraxel and LED Light Therapy treatments, spaced approximately three to four weeks apart.
What will my skin look like immediately afterwards?
Fraxel re:fine is designed to have minimal downtime. After the procedure it is common to experience a sunburned feeling but this usually diminishes after two to three hours. Some clients experience a mild swelling and puffiness for two to three days. Clients can wear make-up to reduce the sunburned appearance and it is imperative to wear a sunblock after the treatment to protect your skin. We usually treat on Fridays to minimise downtime from work commitments.
How long will it last?
We recommend a “top up” course every two to three years.
How much is a course?
Our 'Renew You' Package includes three Fraxel re:fine Laser treatments and three LED Light Therapies for $2,400 (or 10% deposit then $41.53 per week on our easy payment plan.)

Marilyn Harel tells us about her experience with Fraxel:
I've had a life time of being in the strong tropical sun with my face being whipped by the wind of the salty sea air speeding across the water. This has not been very kind to my skin and I was not very conscientious about protecting it.
However, upon reaching my seventies I realised I was not ready to be wrinkly old lady so I put myself in the care of the therapists at About Face. They recommended their Fraxel treatment and then I have had follow up skin care treatments and used the products recommended by the About Face therapists.
Afterwards when I returned to my tropical island home of Mauritius, friends and family remarked on how good I was looking and how did I achieve it. I simply said I had put myself in the hands of About Face. A bit of a problem when I wish to take advantage of senior discounts, at 71, I sometimes have to prove I'm eligible.
And if you're worried about downtime don't! This photo was taken the day after one of my Fraxel treatments!
Kerre McIvor (nee Woodham) tells us about her experience with Fraxel:
‘Gosh, your skin feels fantastic!’ said the makeup artist, who was getting me ready to MC an awards evening recently. ‘It shouldn’t,’ I replied, ‘I’ve had a busy weekend of socialising.’ ‘Well, whatever you’re using is working,’ she said. And she should know. She’s made me up countless times and knows my skin better than I do. I told her I’d had a course of Fraxel and she nodded sagely. ‘That would be it,’ she said. ‘I’ve heard great things about it.’
Her reaction has been similar to that of a number of friends and acquaintances. Friends who knew I was trialling Fraxel have been enthusiastic about the results. My skin has finer pores, they say. It looks fresher. I look younger. Acquaintances ask me if I’ve been on holiday. And that, I think, is the Fraxel difference. Rather than looking like every other expressionless zombie, it lets you look like a younger, more relaxed you. I have no desire to be 20 again. I have earned my lines and wrinkles. And I definitely don’t want my face to be frozen into a mask.
I’m 50 this birthday and I’m okay about that, but I want to look the best me I can be. Fraxel has certainly helped me do that.
