What causes wrinkles and fine lines?

These are caused by a breakdown of the collagen fibres in the skin.This breakdown is due to natural ageing but can be heavily accelerated by UV damage, free radical damage, neglect, lifestyle (high caffeine, high GI foods) and medication. Age, stress, lifestyle and the New Zealand sun are all big contributors. 

You may also notice a lack of firmness in the skin as you age - this is also due to a breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen is responsible for the structure (scaffold) of the skin and elastin is responsible for the 'sit and fit' of the skin.

Lifestyle Tips for wrinkles and fine lines:

Wear sunscreen daily and sunglasses with good coverage when in the sun. Avoid rubbing the eyes and be gentle when removing eye make-up. Increase your water intake to at least two 750ml bottles of water per day and take an evening primrose oil supplement. Enjoy a healthy diet and focus on having lots of leafy greens (kale, spinach, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage) and antioxidants (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, red delicious, granny smith and gala apples, prunes, plums, cherries, pecans and russet potatoes) every day. Keep caffeine intake as low as possible and even try swapping to green or peppermint tea.
